Determining the scope of research and training programmes, shaping the institutions and public profile of a certain discipline require a clear conception of its place in the system of sciences. Comparison of definitions and research subjects of human geography and regional science reveals their profound similarity which is not offset by minor differences in theory and methodology. This allows to draw the conclusion that the emergence of regional science as a separate discipline cannot be regarded as necessary or justified by pure theoretical criteria. However, instead of devoting much energy to defining disciplinary boundaries, a sensible division of labour should be pursued. In the competition with regional science, human geography must focus its research activities on topics where an advantage can be taken of the perspectives and skills rooted in the traditions of the discipline. In order to strengthen geography's position, a sophisticated marketing strategy is advocated and outlined by the author at the end of the paper.
