The article deals with those European urban problems that require the implementation of the concept of a socially sustainable development as well as the spatial, social challenges in Budapest and the difficulties in the realisation of the socially sustainable urban development.
The analyses reveal the major social consequences of the different urban rehabilitation models in Budapest such as the changing population of the affected districts, the gentrifica- tion and the intensification of segregation processes. The article makes proposals for the establishment of a socially sustainable urban rehabilitation.
